A very special location….

Windy Hall is located within the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The Pennines are the upland spine of northern England and comprise high open heather moorlands which fall steeply down to wooded and pasture valleys. The hills may not have the craggy grandeur of the nearby Lake District, but they have their own unique beauty. The small town of Alston with its steep cobbled main street and ancient buildings is just 3 miles away and can be reached by a variety of scenic walks, cycle paths or by the narrow gauge South Tynedale Railway.

The unique elevated location of Windy Hall is one of its attractions. However this means it's only accessible by 4WD vehicles or with a short walk up the 200m track from the public road and parking. But don't panic if you don't have a 4WD and don’t fancy the walk as we'll always try to be around to give you and your luggage a ride up in our own 4WD.

Finding Windy Hall

All of the road approaches to Windy Hall are on steep single track roads, with sharp bends and gates so they need a little care. For cyclists and walkers we are just a 20 minutes walk off the Pennine Way and 10 minutes off the Isaac's Tea Trail Walking route. Windy Hall is actually on Pennine Cycleway Route 68, and just 3 miles off the popular C2C route linking the Irish and North Sea coasts. The grid reference is NY699507 and we're on OS Explorer map OL43 but its worth having OL31 as well for full coverage of the countryside around us.

Sadly we are not well served by public transport. There are infrequent buses from both Carlisle and Haltwhistle railway station to Alston and to the village of Slaggyford which is about 25 minutes walk from Windy Hall. If you are travelling by public transport call us well beforehand and we will do our best to pick you up. There's an early morning bus to Alston from Hexham and a return service in the evening. If you arrive on the early bus from Hexham we'll waive our 3 pm check-in rule! We fly a microlight out of Glassonby Airfield in the Eden Valley. So if you arrive by microlight we'll pick you up.
